The environmental impact of a product is made up of several components, among them climate, water consumption, energy use and the ozone layer. A life cycle assessment measures all of these impacts within a single scientific framework, at every stage the product passes through from raw material to the end of its life.

LCA comes in when EPD preparation, ecodesign, product comparison or a tender requirement calls for more than a single carbon figure. Karbonsa models the life cycle of your product within the ISO 14040 framework, calculates its multi criteria environmental impacts and turns the results into a report you can put to use.

Note: We set the scope of the assessment to suit your needs. The choice between cradle-to-gate boundaries, which look from raw material to the factory gate, and cradle-to-grave boundaries, which extend to disposal of the product, is made according to the purpose of the study.

We run LCA in four stages

The ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards define life cycle assessment in four stages, from goal definition through to interpretation.

Goal and Scope Definition

We set out the purpose of the study, the functional unit and the system boundaries. Whether the assessment runs cradle-to-gate or all the way to end of life is settled here.

Inventory Analysis

We compile the energy, material and water inputs at each stage along with the emissions and waste they produce, in a systematic way. Wherever possible we work with real data from your facility.

Impact Assessment

We convert the data collected into environmental impact categories such as climate change, water and acidification, and set out the impact of the product category by category.

Interpretation

We identify the critical points in the results, show which stage creates the greatest impact and report the improvement opportunities.

EPD preparation

We produce the life cycle data needed to prepare an environmental product declaration (EPD). For construction products we work in line with the EN 15804 rules.

Ecodesign

By showing which stage of the product creates the greatest environmental impact, we steer your material and design decisions towards lower impact options.

Product and option comparison

We compare two products or two design options using the same method and set out in measurable terms which one performs better environmentally.

Building life cycle assessment

We assess environmental performance from construction materials through to the service life of the building with the EN 15978 approach and support your green building targets.

If your buyer asks only for the carbon data of your product, we also calculate the product carbon footprint (ISO 14067) as a single indicator from the same model and document it in a report you can present to them.
